And you think that North American refs are bad!

Well, I'm not going to complain about the NHL refs, CFL refs, Baseball umpires or even the guys that keep watch over the national frisbee tournament anymore.

Not after watching a few of these World Cup Football matches the last few days.

Over the last couple of days I've seen guys hand out red cards like Christmas Cards to old friends, one guy tugs on a shirt and he's given a red card, two minutes later another guy looks like he's clear cutting a forest and it's play on! Somebody, somewhere explain this crazy game to this uneducated bumpkin!

Today was a particularly bizarre day for officialdom, in the early morning game almost the entire starting line up on the Ghana squad seemed to pick up a yellow card while the Czechs also felt the wrath of the officials but not to the same degree as the Black Star team.

Then while clicking back and forth between the CFL game on CBC and the Italy/USA match on Sportsnet I watched the Uruguayan official hand out what seemed like a steady supply of cards, culminating in two red cards to the Americans and one for the Italians. Now this display of maximum enforcement, left the US down to nine men for the bulk of the last fourty five minutes of play. It also provided some ominous signs for fans of Italy, if I were an Italian fan today, I'm wondering what the heck is wrong with my squad, they didn't look particularly sharp and they couldn't take advantage of the depleted American roster, having to settle for a 1-1 draw. Things must be getting a little tense in the land of azzurri.

As for the refs, somebody needs to share the word that they're not really the stars of the show, despite the amount of cameo time they get on TV as they hand out yet another card of colour.
