Cruise season is underway as the Vision of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship pulled into port and unloaded its gaggle of sightseers.
The first cruise ship of the season deposited some 2400 passengers plus crew members into the streets of the city on Wednesday morning, ready to take in the museums and trinket shops, travel out to Butze Rapids or join in on any other number of activities set up for their arrival.

The first cruise ship of the season was scheduled to arrive today at eight a.m. and stay in town until six p.m. as the 2007 cruise ship season gets underway with the Vision of the Seas arriving with approximately 2,435 passengers.
The ship’s arrival marks the start of a season that will be significantly bigger than 2006, according to Port Authority Vice President of Marketing and Business Development Shaun Stevenson.
“It is going to be significantly busier this season than it was last year with the addition of the Wednesday ship. Also the ships on average are larger and the amount of time they spend in port is dramatically longer. I think the community is going to see a lot more activity with the cruise sector.”
“I think it is a likelihood that we are going to surpass 100,000 passengers and it could be as high as 120,000 when all is said and done at the end of the year,” he added.
As well as a visit by the Vision of the Seas, there will be two other large cruise ship visits this week with the 2,240 passenger Norwegian Star in town for five hours on Thursday and the 1,950 passenger Infinity arriving for nine hours on Saturday. The final ship of the season is scheduled to depart from Northland Terminal at six p.m. on September 24 after another nine hour visit.
And with the 2007 season underway, Stevenson says he is already looking ahead.
“I think the last few years since Prince Rupert entered the cruise industry has demonstrated the potential. Now we are anticipating growth in the Alaska theatre. Prince Rupert, hopefully will play a role in that,” he said.
