The B.C. port city of Prince Rupert has a growing rat problem and is set to bring back its vermin control program that was cut in 2004 to save money.

Bob Thompson, who heads the city's public works department, says there's been a baby boom of big Norway sewer rats because of better breeding weather.

He told CBC News Wednesday that experts will be made available to advise people on how to keep rats out of their yards

"It's not very pleasing to see rats on your property, and as winter approaches, they'll be looking to get inside somewhere. You certainly don't want them in your own house."

Thompson says if necessary, exterminators will be called in to help residents who have been complaining to city hall. People have also been taking matters into their own hands.

David Kroeker, who manages Tyee Building Supplies, says he has been watching rat traps fly off his shelves.

He says one of his customers told him a story about a gang of rats huddled near the harbour.
"She was down at the pier and she saw all these people huddled around the fence line and she went to look at it. And it looked like the rocks were moving and they were actually rats."
