Prince Rupert soldier injured in Afghanistan crash

A Canadian soldier was killed and six others injured in a vehicle accident outside of Kandahar, Afghanistan today. Also injured in the traffic accident was the groups Afghan translator.

The Canadian 21 tonne armoured patrol vehicle, known as an LAV III smashed into a local taxi, flipped over and came to a rest in a heap of metal on the side of the road.

The deceased soldier was identified as Corporal Paul James Davis of Nova Scotia, seriously injured in the accident were Private Miguel Chavez and Master Corporal Timothy Wilson who are to be transferred to an American Hospital at Landstuhl, Germany.

One of the remaining injured soldiers was identified as Private Mark Taylor from Prince Rupert, who is listed as in stable condition and is resting at a hospital at Kandahar airfield.

The soldiers were members of the PPCLI and were based out of Shilo, Manitoba. They had just begun their routine patrol for the day, leaving the main base on their way to a meeting with Afghan officials when the incident happened.

Canadian military officials on the scene say it appears that the Light Armoured Vehicle struck the taxi and then flipped over, it is not suspected that it was the victim of any kind of attack from local insurgents. The incident is just the latest in a rash of road accidents, that have injured or killed Canadian soldiers while serving in Afghanistan.
