The Beatles-- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Forty one years ago today, the Beatles changed the musical world with one of the earliest of concept albums, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Its recording signalled a change of direction for the pop stars of the early sixties, from the easy going short cover versions and original compositions, to a more orchestrated and thoughtful approach to music making.
Sgt. Pepper, that child of the late sixties embodied the sea change of popular music, ushering in the era of the psychedelic times and experimentation with East Indian themes and more mystical approaches.
The album itself eventually would spur on a number of cover versions of its own and a not particularly well received feature length movie, which featured many of the top pop stars of the late seventies taking on the roles made famous by John, George, Paul and Ringo.
Though often imitated, as they say the original was the real deal.
It brought forward some of the most productive of years for the Beatles and in the end also signalled the rapid decline of the band as conflicting personalities and musical directions would bring to a dramatic end to one of the most influential periods of modern music to this day.
