Hopping out of the travel trailer and back into the political debate

"It would be more believable if the NDP admitted they wanted to extend the session in order to get more per diem money"— Former North Coast MLA Bill Belsey providing his interpretation of the recent complaints by the opposition about the ending of the spring legislative session.

When we last saw Bill Belsey, the former MLA for the North Coast was making plans for an extended exploration session of the southwestern USA, chasing Sun and relaxation time.

However, it would appear that one can only take so much down time and out of the blue Mr. Belsey reappeared on the political scene, with a letter to the editor in Friday’s Daily News.

Indicating that he’s been following Provincial developments during his semi retirement, he took offence at the tone of recent comments from current MLA Gary Coons over the recent ending of the legislative session; Mr. Belsey took pen in hand and fired off his own interpretation of the motives of the NDP and what he believes are the hollowness of their complaints.

Clearly missing the trading of barbs that mark life in the Legislature, Mr. Belsey tried to regain some of his form with the written word in Friday’s paper.

NDP wasted lots of debate time

To the editor,

I see from the information NDP gave your paper you would like everyone to believe those Liberals have “rammed through” legislation in an attempt to stifle debate.

Mr. Coons knows as well as I do that both parties meet at the beginning and during the session to discuss what will be coming before the legislature and exactly how long the legislative session will last. Mr. Coons and the NDP have the opportunity to debate any and all legislation and they can decide how long they wish to debate each piece of legislation.

Those that take the time to follow what is happening in the legislature know the NDP have frittered away countless hours debating frivolous issues concerning ministry estimates while important legislation laid on the table for debate. They also know the Liberals added an extra week for debating legislation to accommodate the NDP. They know the Liberals added another venue for the NDP to debate estimates in order to allow more time in the legislature for debate.

The Liberals doubled question period time in order to give the NDP another venue to ask questions.
.
It would be more believable if the NDP admitted they wanted to extend the session in order to get more per diem money.

Bill Belsey
