Radio Programming made easy

More changes on your radio dial in the Vancouver area (and on the internet elsewhere in the world) Corus has put the Mojo format out of it's misery, instead turning the 730 frequency to an all sports format. Mojo becomes the second All Sports station in the city, following the Team 1040 which has been on the air for a number of years now. The Team hasn't exactly found a huge audience either, so the arrival of a second sports station is hard to figure. I can see the discussion in the Corus boardroom, All right, a ratings war for the bottom end of the scale, bring it on..

The mojo format which has found a bit of success in Toronto never really caught fire in Vancouver, as the station struggled to get off the floor of the radio ratings. The move to all sports is a tad interesting, as the Mojo format was basically a glorified sports format, with sophomoric humour tossed in at times to keep you on your toes. What the actual change will be should be interesting to see. Maybe "More scores, less bores" could be the positioning statement from the new Mojo.

The decision to become an official all sports station was based on the success of the afternoon show "The Sports Zone- with Bob Marjanovich". And Bob is going to be the man for awhile. All other Mojo announcers were either fired, or "reassigned" to other Corus stations. Bob will be the only local voice on the air for the near future as the New Mojo - Just Sports gets launched.

The plan is to carry programming from ESPN in the morning drive slot, until they can cobble together a morning team for "Just Sports Radio". The out of town programming will continue throughout the day until the Marjanovich show, and then it's back to non local programming.

Funny somewhere back in my bad old days, I remember some broadcast teacher telling me that the beauty of radio was it was LOCAL. Apparently that's not a theory shared by today's Programming gurus.
