I feel like a winner tonight (but he wasn't)

The end of the Joe Lieberman for President campaign came tonight, his exit stage right speech talked about fighting a good fight, raising the unpopular issues, keeping to his beliefs and then he was gone. Never really a contender, now admitting surrender. Lieberman who found his support light from the get go, suffered the indignity of having his former running mate Al Gore support a different camp. And hard to believe but that was the good news, as it seems that an Al Gore endorsement isn't worth much anymore, hey there Howard Dean.

Lieberman who spent a lot of time in Delaware trying to win the favour of the voters , found his advances not returned, garnering only 11% of the vote. In a state that should have been receptive to his ideas he found no takers. And so he ends his quest, one which never really seemed to gain any altitude. His concession speech recounted his campaign themes, that of a moderate Democrat, a part of the landscape that has apparently been claimed by the Kerry camp.

For Lieberman it's closure on a wild run, from a possible Vice President to political roadkill. For the sake of a few dangling chads he could have been the second most important politician in the world. Instead, he's now the answer to a future Trivial Pursuit question. Such are the fates of those that take the leap.
