143 for those that stand on guard for thee

Canada celebrates its 143rd birthday today,  a coast to coast to coast celebration of Canadiana offering up the chance for a rare display of exuberance over all things Canadian.

While the big show will of course be focused on Ottawa where the Queen will watch over the national day of celebration, Prince Rupert too will have its own party to throw, though we'll have to make do with Mayor Mussallem and Gary Coons for our official party.

Events get underway at Mariner's Park  at the noon hour with the flag raising, singing of O Canada and Citizenship ceremony  set for 12:15 until 1:30.

A variety of speeches will follow at 1:30, with the cutting of the giant Birthday cake set for 1:40 pm.

From 1:45 to 4 pm there will be a variety of Multicultural Music Entertainment provided to help keep the party rolling.

Children's activities will take place starting at 2, with a number of events planned for youngsters.

In the midst of all that entertainment will be the Canadiana Costume walkabout , where locals are asked to show their pride of country with their most red and white accented wardrobe.

It will all wind up by 4, just in time for the arrival of the weekly cruise ship, which will provide locals with the opportunity to welcome ashore the weekly landing of tourists, who most likely will be a tad disappointed to have missed out on the day's activities.

Though the crowd downtown should provide a bump in attendance for the court house lawn market this week.

Fireworks as always a Canada Day tradition will take place later in the evening as dusk approaches.

The Special events website has a list of the day's events.
