Big project for Big Peaks of Blackcomb

Whistler Blackcomb is making plans to build one of those eye catching creations destined to make an impression with locals and visitors alike.

The Ski resort north of Vancouver is about to build the Peak to Peak gondola, a 4.4 kilometre connector between the Roundhouse Lodge and the Rendezvous Lodge, a trip sure to provide some of the most impressive scenery ever seen, but probably not for those faint of heart.

At it's highest point the gondola track will be 415 metres above the valley floor and at one stretch will travel along three kilometres between towers, the longest unsupported stretch for gondolas in the world.

28 cabins will carry 28 passengers each, providing a travelling time of 11 minutes, which means that the gondola can transport 4,100 passengers per hour, none of whom had better suffer from vertigo.

It's being compared to the likes of the CN tower as far as legacies go and will cost over 51 million dollars when it is completed in time for the 2008-09 ski season.

Blackcomb Whistler provides a comprehensive visual display for the project on their website, which includes a virtual trip across the valley and other bits of information for those wanting to learn much, much more.
