NASCAR season is underway

For racing enthusiasts today was like Christmas Day, with the start of the NASCAR race season officially underway with the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

Over the last few years NASCAR has stolen some of the Days of Thunder from the likes of the IRL circuit and the perpetually on the ropes CART loop (once again reported as on the verge of merger with IRL), as the stock car racers grab the attention and the ratings.

NASCAR has had a colourful past, with many characters sliding in behind the wheel to seek out ther fame and glory.

In fact, we have footage here of the very first of the NASCAR races, which featured a very much respected underdog claim victory in those early days of the bump and run.

It's been a slow and steady run for NASCAR to the their point of success these days, though some suggest that the best days of the circuit are NOW behind them, with little room left for growth of that brand of auto racing.

At the moment that seems like a far off proposition, as in the short term, it's expected that NASCAR is still gonig to be a money making proposition for owners, networks and sponsors alike.
