Sunday was a day of victory for little brothers everywhere, as Eli Manning the younger sibling of famed NFL quarterback Peyton came into his own, and maybe now even struts on a much larger stage than his older brother.
Eli, who has been living in the shadow of big Bro Peyton for a few years now, achieved what is now said to be one of the more impressive Super Bowl surprises in recent years, perhaps even going as far back as another New York team and a now legendary figure who won against all the odds.
Heading into Sunday’s Super Bowl, the New York Giants were considered to be at least twelve point underdogs, with few expecting the Giants to be able to overcome the undefeated New England Patriots, supposedly ready to finish off the perfect season with the team’s fourth Super Bowl victory.
It would seem the message never quite made it as far as the Giants dressing room. From the onset with the Giants controlling over half the time of the first quarter, the Patriots seemed to be completely off of their normal rhythm, unable to put together much of an attack and allowing the Giants to put together lengthy drives and chew up valuable time.
For the most part, the Giants defence was the stars of the early going, the front line were frequent invaders into the Patriots backfield and could be more often than not found landing on top of a beleaguered Tom Brady. The pressure put on the Patriots offensive line proved to be too much to handle, as they badgered and beat up their rivals at will, making Sunday a day of misery for Brady, who it seemed was thrown to the turf and hit more times in one game than he had for the entire season.
The Patriots defence were up to their challenge for the most part, bending but not breaking at key times, limiting the Giants to few points in the defensive battle that took up three of the four quarters.
But it was the fourth quarter that salvaged what was on track to being the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history. As the final fifteen minutes of play began its countdown, there would be numerous lead changes, highlight reel catches and two remarkable drives down the field that finally gave the championship game some life.
With time running down, Brady’s front line finally provided him some time and much needed protection to launch one of his now legendary late game drives, a scenario that usually ends with the Patriots on the wining side of the board and Brady hailed once again as the King of Quarterbacks.
Sunday it seemed as though the familiar show was about to repeat as the Patriots took the lead with only 2:42 remaining, in most games this year that would have been the death rattle for the opposition, the sign that while they gave it a good effort, destiny wasn’t on their side.
On Sunday, destiny had a bit of time left on the clock.
When the Giants regained the ball, they proceeded to provide one of the greatest comebacks in Super Bowl history, a remarkable drive down the field highlighted by a scrambling Manning hurling the most desperate of desperation passes to a leaping and battling David Tyree that landed the Giants on the Patriots 24 yard line with time running down.
A few plays later, Manning found Plaxico Burress in the end zone for the winning touchdown, providing a final score of 17-14, some serous problems for bookmakers everywhere and a celebration day for the still undefeated Miami Dolphins of 1972, still the holders of the title to the only undefeated season.
While the game had some mind numbing moments in the first three quarters, that fourth quarter is the one that NFL fans will be talking about for years to come. For Manning, who earlier in the year had heard the catcalls that his days in New York were numbered, the victory must be the sweetest feeling of all.
As all brothers may do from time to time, he asked his brother Peyton for a little advice before the game. The answer was rather simple, just ‘Go in there, have some fun, you can do it.’
He took the advice, he had more than his fair share of the fun and now he’s a King of New York.
