Memo for PM the PM: You have bigger problems than the state of hockey!

Well possibly it being the topic on almost everyone's lips he couldn't help but weigh in. But really, one would think that the Prime Minister of Canada might have a few more important things to worry about, than whether the National game has swung out of it's orbit.

No doubt spurred on by his aides, the Prime Minister offered up his own take on the Bertuzzi incident, and his impression of the current state of professional hockey. Advising the league to "clean up it's act", the Prime Minister suggested he may discuss the situation with the Minister of Sport.

Now he's entitled to his opinion, just as any other citizen and fan of the game is. But he's the leader of the country and personally, I'd like to think he would spend a lot more of his time, working on the big picture things. If he wants to "clean up" anything, how about the corrupt behavior of some of his party members and of our bureaucrats. Maybe re-read the briefing books on the dangerous situations in the Middle East, Haiti and any other hot spot of the world. Give some time and thought, to the fate of our soldiers, airmen and sailors whom we send off to work with less than adequate equipment or support. Health Care seems to be a topic that everybody has an interest in, perhaps there's something there to catch his eye. He could go about fixing that Democratic deficit we hear so much about these days, returning a sense of empowerment to the voter and the tax payer. Those are the things I would expect him to have at the top of the to do list. Not getting side tracked on the issue of hockey violence, please spare us the Royal Commissions.

Hockey is a treasured sport, but it's purely eye candy for the masses. It shouldn't be taking up more than a nanosecond of the Federal Governments attention, nor should it even provide a briefing paper for a Prime Minister. The lead news story in the real world today, was the horrific murder by terrorists, of over 190 people in Spain, people who merely wanted to go to work or school yesterday. That's where the real work is. I think that Mr. Martin should concentrate on the more important issues, keeping our nation safe, hopefully prosperous and fair to all, that's where he should address his talents.

As for the sport of hockey, let the people worry about whether it has lost it's relevance in our daily lives. Even the apparently thick skulled leaders of the NHL will quickly get the message, if the hockey fan chooses to ignore it's product. We can all find something else to keep us busy. Surely the Prime Minister surely can do the same!
