The Lost Holiday!

Newfoundland is far ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to stat holidays and celebrations. I refer of course to that progressive province’s observance of St. Patrick’s Day. For those that need to celebrate all things Irish, or just want an excuse to get out of the house and party, this day is for you. While the rest of the nation will dress up in something green, warble some form of Irish traditional tune or bend an elbow at their favorite watering hole, rushing to fit it all in. The folks in Newfoundland will be able to take their time and do it up right.

If indeed St. Patrick’s Day is a day when everyone can feel Irish, should we not be rewarded for our efforts. The Guinness Beer people have been pushing for a couple of years now on our behalf. A witty and successful advertising campaign, designed to make the 17th of March, a national Day.

There’s been much talk of a National break in the overbearing, cold and seemingly never ending winter. Normally suggested for February, perhaps a delay to March would be more beneficial to the nation. Spring is ever so close now, the last kicks of winter nipping at our heels. A wonderful day of comradeship would be just the tonic to celebrate the decline of the ugly season and welcome the promise of a new spring.

Let’s tip a glass and tip our hats to Newfoundland, they have their priorities in order. We should join them without delay. Enjoy your St. Patrick's Day!
