With absentee rates running above 50 percent, all schools in Kitimat and within the Haisla Nation have been closed until Monday November 9. The decision to close the schools was made in conjunction with Northern health, and due to the fact that with the increasing absentee rate school staff were finding it hard to to maintain effective classroom instruction.
All of the school illness reports coming out of Kitimat have been treated as though it is the H1N1 virus, with the schools closed to all but Janitorial staffs for the next week. Mount Elizabeth Secondary School closed last week and was supposed to re-open today, however in light of the ongoing flu situation they too, like all other Kitimat schools in the Coast Mountain District will remain closed for the remainder of this week as will St. Anthony's Independent School.
In Kitamaat Village the situation is much the same, as community and school officials there continue to disinfect the schools and recreation centre to try and keep the increasing numbers of flu patients down.
The coast Mountain School district has issued a press release outlining the steps they have taken regarding the outbreak of flu in the community, advising parents and students to isolate themselves as much as possible over the next few days.
