Smoke em if you got em, but smoke em where we let you

BC Ferries is cutting down on the available space for those who wish to smoke on their coastal water journies.

While the restrictions will for the moment only affect the southern crossings between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, the plan is to institute the restrictions fleet wide by the fall.

More restrictive smoking rules take effect next week on BC Ferries' larger vessels sailing the major routes between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Effective Monday, smoking will be limited to specially designated areas on the outer decks, said spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.

"They will be clearly marked on each of the vessels. We did take into consideration access points and whatnot, so there is signage in place. We actually installed over 300 signs on our major vessels to clearly designate those areas."

Smoking is already banned in the interior areas and vehicle decks on B.C.'s ferry fleet.
Smokers had been allowed to smoke anywhere on the outer passenger decks.

The change by the ferry corporation will allow non-smokers to enjoy walking outside on the decks of the big ferries without having to put up with second-hand smoke.

Marshall said BC Ferries plans to introduce smoking restrictions on its other vessels in the fall.
