With the vision of Mike Bullard twisting in the stale air of a Global television studio still clearly with us, we await the latest attempt at late night entertainment to come from Canadian television.
Global Late night kicks off on Saturday night, as the Global television network presents four Saturdays of late night television to try and repatriate the sleep avoiding Canadian television viewer.
Global Late night brings a young comedic talent from Calgary to the big smoke of Toronto to host the four week test run. Webb Fink, who has been hosting a morning TV show on Calgary’s "A" channel, gets the nod as the next great hope. The one chosen to help us remove the last uncomfortable moments of the Bullard blow out, from our cathode ray exposed mind.
The house band is gone, and rather than a straight sofa and desk type of traditional talk show, Global Late night will use some sketch comedy, a roundtable and for its debut a nod to Canada’s love of hockey with guest Scotty Bowman.
Fink beat out veteran comedian Ron James and singer and perennial awards show host Jann Arden for the chance to be sacrificed to the television critics. For Fink’s sake one hopes that the first four shows go smoothly and he gets a chance to work out the er, kinks, if you will.
Otherwise we are afraid we already know the headline in the Entertainment section of every paper and the phrase for every Entertainment beat reporter on TV. Should Fink not pull it off, or the show finds itself adrift it won’t be long until we read and hear about it. We can see the headline as though the ink hasn't dried yet, FINK STINKS!
Television it’s not a job for the weak of heart, nor the sensitive of psyche!
