The Thursday March 11 edition of the Daily News featured their regular scorecard on city council issues, this one featuring the deliberations and votes from selected items of the March 8 session of council.

This weeks feature appeared on page three of the Wednesday edition.

Question One: Council put on hold the erection of a Highway of Tears sign, after hearing the cost would be $10,000. Council has received $500 each from Metlakatla and the Skeena Queen Charlotte Regional District toward the $10,000 cost of the sign, but council is hoping more partners will come forward to help finance the project and plans to approach surrounding communities at the next Community to Community forum being held at the end of March. It was also suggested that perhaps the money could be better spent on an education program through television or radio advertising that was ongoing.

Question Three: Council approved grant applications to the Union of B. C. Municipalities for two projects. The Digby Island/Tsimshian Peninsula Access Project Study Phase is worth $25,000 and the Transit Grant is worth $20,000. A Transit grant will help improve the safety and access for seniors and others, by paving some existing gravel at high use bus stops.

City council scoresheet for February 22, 2010

The Wednesday, February 24 edition of the Daily News featured their regular scorecard on city council issues, this one featuring the deliberations and votes from selected items of the February 22 session.

This weeks feature appeared on page three of the Wednesday edition, Councillor Kinney was absent from the nights deliberations.

Question One: A grant of $2,000 will be given to the organizers of Hobiyee 2010 to help offset the costs of hosting the event on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.

Question Three: The city will write to the Ministry of Education expressing concerns around empty school buildings in Prine Rupert and the School District being unable to sell them. The letter will also ask for clarification whether the buildings are taxable.

Question Five: Keith Stephen of 1917 McNicholl Avenue received approval for his application on a development variance to build an oversized auxiliary building for an RV, motorcycles and a workshop. The garage will b 30' x 40' x 22' on two of his four lots. Originally City Planner Zeno Krekic had advised council to deny the application, but after discussion council voted to allow Stephen the variance.

It's another Monday night, just what has your council been up to? 2010 edition


A brand new year of civic governance beckons, as Prince Rupert's elected Mayor and council set forward on a turbulent course for 2010, with many economic challenges ahead, this year could be a most interesting one for watchers of all matters council.

Below we will track the hopefully transparent and accountable trail of democracy, with links to the agendas, minutes and other pertinent details of Municipal life. All of our information will be taken from the City of Prince Rupert website for the most part, with the agenda posted at the top, the attendance at council in the middle and the minutes and outside notes if any provided at the bottom. All of this information can be found by clicking on the date for the session which you wish to learn more about.

As well we will have a link to our session to session tracker, so you can see which of our municipal representatives are diligent in attendance and participation and which ones tend to stay away from the Monday night gatherings.
