A gold rush of jobs in Kamloops

This could explain the migration pattern out of the Northwest, Kamloops with an unemployment rate of 4% is spanning the world in search of people to move to the Thompson River valley in quest of work.

The city of 87,000 is at the start of a recruitment drive to attract 68,000 more employees to the region in the next five years. Which if all comes together will make for a rather startling jump in population for the city and the region.

Jeff Putnam, CEO of Venture Kamloops has been busy attending job fairs in Europe and has found a willing audience ready to listen to his sales pitch about life in the Interior of British Columbia.

Venture Kamloops have identified a number of key areas where there will be a great need for employees and for the short term the plan is to add at least 8,000 more workers this year to the eight sectors hungriest for jobs in the Kamloops-Kelowna region.

British Columbia as a province is expected to be over one million job openings short during the next 12 years, with a shortfall of at least 350,000 people in key sectors.

It gives you some idea as to what the Northwest will be up against as the various projects proposed for this region begin to come on line. However, with many of those not anticipated to be up and running for a year or more, there's a good chance that the exodus will continue with Kamloops and Kelowna one of the hot spots for moving vans in the months to come.
