Roads were on the mind of City council last week, and while perhaps the numerous pot holes sprouting up around town might have been a good topic to work on, it was the prospect of increased traffic through the downtown area that gave council cause to think about pavement.
With increased traffic expected with the completion of the Container Port at Fairview, the city will begin discussions with provincial officials to look at the possibility of building a road bypass to provide trucks with access to the Fairview Container Terminal.
The Daily News covered the story on page three of Monday’s paper, with the following city council brief:
The city of Prince Rupert and Prince Rupert Economic Development will be meeting with provincial officials to discuss the potential of building a road bypass to provide trucks with access to the Fairview Container Terminal.
Coun. Sheila Gordon-Payne asked last Monday whether the city had received any reply on the traffic survey of five corners, Second Avenue and the Wantage Road bypass.
Gord Howie, city administrator, said they are currently arranging some meeting sin the near future with transportation officials and the Minister of Economic Development officials around the whole issue question of infrastructure required with the first and second phases of the container port and Northern Gateway.
“We anticipate those meetings to take place in the next couple of weeks,” he said.
