Banking has always been an important part of the Prince Rupert scene, back in 1911 the Bank of Montreal could be found on Third Avenue.

Long since moved over to Secnd Avenue, it seems just a little smaller today than it did almost one hundred years ago.

It's the home of justice in Prince Rupert now, but in 1912 Market Place was but an empty and barely cleared lot of land in what would eventually become downtown Prince Rupert.

Prince Rupert Historica--December 6

Furniture stores it seems have always been a part of the Prince Rupert Business class, in this picture dating back to 1911, the "Big Furniture Store" also known as the F. W. and co. Furniture, stood ready to offer the latest in consumer goods for a new frontier.

Just down the block, you'll find the F. W. Funeral Director business, making for a very economic use of wood we suspect.

Fishing was king back in the early days of Prince Rupert, as this photo from Prince Rupert harbour shows. The Herring industry was a key ingredient in the early success of the Prince Rupert fishing industry.

It was a long time landmark in the city holding down the lot where Northwest Community college staff, students and faculty now park their cars.

The Savoy Hotel a favourite watering hole for the fishing industry workers, was destroyed by fire in one of the infamous fires of Prince Rupert history.

Much has been made of the new housing development off of 11th Avenue East, but home construction was the talk of the town almost one hundred years ago.

Prince Rupert Historica--November 13

Perhaps one of the most famous names associated with the development of the early days of Prince Rupert is that of Charles Melville Hays, he of the Grand Trunk Railroad and dreamer of a world renowned super port on the Pacific Ocean.

Lost in the tragedy of the sinking of the Titanic, his dream would come to fruition a century later with the opening of the Fairview Container Terminal.

In this picture from the Prince Rupert Archives Mr. Hays is sitting with a group of men in front of the Grand Trunk Inn circa 1908, perhaps he was waiting for a train to come in!

Roads have always been a talking point in Prince Rupert, from today's ongoing rehabilitation of an aging infrastructure, to the lengthy closures of streets around the city, everyone has an opinion on the roads.

In this photo from the Prince Rupert photo archives we take a look at a wooden road that connected Sixth Avenue East to McBride Street back in 1912.

From the Prince Rupert Photo archives we discovered this snapshot of the past, a sample of some of the housing of the early 1900's and what appears to be an example that the deer have always been part of the city's landscaping.

This showcases some of the early housing of the early days of Prince Rupert, just barely carved out of the muskeg.

From the Prince Rupert Archives November/December

We've been doing a little Internet sleuthing over the last few days, looking for sites about Prince Rupert's past history and some of the people that built the city through the years.

Must admit that it's been pretty thin pickings thus far, but we have come across a pretty impressive collection of pictures from the Prince Rupert Archives, so we figured we would highlight a few over the next little while. (You can view their entire on line offering from this link)

There's no particular schedule or direction we're heading with this, just another sliver of Prince Rupert, this one from a look in the past.

We'll archive the selections for November here, and keep a running list of them on the right hand side of the blog.
