The folks at BC Assessment have done like Santa and checked their lists twice, and now Prince Rupert and Port Edward residents will soon find out if their assessors have been naughty or nice.
In a press release issued Wednesday from the Terrace office, BC Assessment announced that more than 6300 property owners in Prince Rupert and Port Edward will soon receive their assessment notices in the mail.
Most properties have seen an increase of 10 to 30 per cent from last year, while businesses in the city (those that are still around we suppose) can expect their commercial or business assessment to rise by 15 to 25 per cent from last year.
Prince Rupert's assessment roll increased from 1.11 billion dollars last year to 1.24 billion for this years assessment, while Port Edward went from 66.6 million to 68.2 million for this year.
The changes in the assessment this year are reflective of changes in the real estate market locally, increase of construction and rezoning.
As always, BC Assessments heads off the traditional question period this year by advising homeowners that they only assess the value of your property, the net determinations of property taxes and such are made from your local municipal government, who should be contacted should you have concerns over tax issues.
But if you're concerned about your property assessment or have questions about that, you should contact them as soon as possible after you've had a chance to look over your assessment for this year.
If you can't wait for your letter carrier to drop off your news in the mail box, you can always make use of the on line search function of the assessment office, which gives you details not only on your property assessment but of those around you. A handy feature that allows you to see if your neighbours trailers and junk are helping or hindering your assessment each year.
