Decisions delayed on BC waterfront

The uncertainty on the waterfront ports of British Columbia will continue for another week, as the two sides in the current negotiations between the ILWU Local 514 and the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association could not reach an agreement during weekend talks.

The BCMEA issued a press release late Saturday advising that while some progress was made during today's talks, key outstanding issues remain to be discussed and an agreement reached upon.

With that the meetings adjourned until Thursday, January 15th when Federal Mediators and Conciliators have asked the two sides to return to the bargaining table to try and reach a agreement on the various concerns.

The supervisors who are represented by the ILWU have been in a legal strike position since January 2nd, but no job action has taken place while the talks have continued. In the interim however, cargo lines have taken to re-routing a number of vessels away from British Columbia so as not to be caught in any labour disruptions should strike action take place.

With no news of a settlement pending and negotiations still to continue, one would imagine that will continue to be the policy of the shipping lines until the situation at BC's ports becomes more clear.

The Northern View had a short item posted on their website today providing for the latest details in the negotiation process.
